Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 2001 ford escort intermittent a/c problems, orange wire, pressure switch

Question
a/c clutch will not engage how do i jumper to engage

Answer
Jeremy,
There are several things that will cause your clutch not to engage. The check for the low pressure switch is more or less used to engage the compressor while we charge refrigerant into the system on the low side, or to narrow the electrical troubleshooting process do to which half of the electrical system the fault lies in. It should not be jumped for the intent of normal operation. This switch is a vital safety device that prevents extensive damage from occuring to your compressor, and in turn the remainder of your system.
Also, your vehicle's a/c is controlled by your PCM (powertrain controle module) It needs to have certain requirements met before it will allow your compressor to come on. The low pressure switch being closed is just one of the requirements.
Your low pressure switch is located in the right rear of your engine compartment on your accumulator. It will have an orange wire and a green wire with a red stripe connecting to it through a plug. Unplug the harness plug from your switch. With the vehicle on, take an insulated wire and jump the terminals in this plug. You should hear the compressor engage. If it does, this tells me that you have a leak in your system that caused a low charge. It should be located, repaired, and then recharged. If it does not, I can try to walk you through the remainder of your system's wiring, to a point, and conduct a few more checks. In order to do these you will need a multimeter or a test light.

Thank you for the question, I hope I was of some assistance. If I can do anything further during this process, or in the future, please do not hesitate to ask. If you found this response to be of some assistance, please remember to rate this answer. Thanks again and good luck in everything.
