Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 2001 Silverado Blows Hot Air, chevy silverado, engine coolant temperature

Question
My 2001 Chevy Silverado Blows hot air. It sometimes works when I 1st start the truck and it usually blows cold A/C for about 10 mins. but after that it just blows hot air. Any ideas what could be wrong with it?

Answer
Allen,
Does your compressor engage at all after it shuts off? Or do you have to wait until after the engine cools off before it will re-engage? A common issue is that your thermostat (coolant - not A/C) may be going bad. Has your vehicle been running at all warmer than usual? According to my literature on your vehicle if your engine coolant temperature is above 250 degrees fahrenheit, your compressor relay output is disabled. This is the first thing that I would consider.
One way to check this is to run your vehicle for a good while before you turn on the A/C. Let it get to normal operating temperature, then try to turn on your A/C. If it doesn't turn on, I feel it would be safe to say this is your issue.
After that... there are several checks that can be made, but on your system a scan tool is necessary to do them. If your coolant thermostat is good, I would recommend that you take it to a reputable shop to have it diagnosed.
Thank you for your question and I hope I was of some assistance. If I can do anything further now or in the future, do not hesitate to ask. If you found this response useful please remember to rate this answer. Thanks again and good luck in everything.
