Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: evaporator replacement, orfice tube, orifice tube

Question
I need to know how the orfice tube is to be inserted. and also do I really have to take the dash out . It looks as though i can do this under the hood. It is a 95 S-10 with a 4.3 liter.I would appreciate your help. i've never done this before. I do know there is a leak so i'm replacing evap. and orfice tube and o-rings.

Answer
Don,
If you look at the orifice tube, it will have a screen on one side and an opening at the other end. You want the screen pointing away from the evaporator core. But no worries, typically they will only go in one direction.
As for removing your evaporator. You will have to take it from inside the cab. But you do not have to remove the dashboard to do it on your truck. It will involve alot of crooked neck positions, but it will drop from the bottom of your dashboard.
Before you get too far into it... make certain your battery is disconnected for at least 5 minutes, this allows the airbags to completely disable themselves, and make certain you drain your radiator. Your heater core will also be in the same housing as your evaporator, and the last thing you want is coolant all over the interior of your truck.
After you re-install it, do not forget the hose at the bottom of the evaporator housing that allows the condenstion to drain out of the cab. This is often a step that gets overlooked, and will cause issues with your carpet mildewing later down the road.
