Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 97 Suburban 5.7L Vortec (A/C not cold), r 134a, compressor output

Question
First off, thanks for making yourself apart of this panel of experts.  Here's the scenario...a/c blows warm (front/rear), compressor is engaging several seconds at a time; none of the lines coming in/out of compressor feel cold to touch; in fact both are hot when ran under NOT........also, only the high mode in the front blows (whether heat or cool).......background.  Last year I had a stereo installed and inadvertently the tech unhooked the linkage that connects/controls the ventilation floor/dash, the a/c wasn't being used so this went unnoticed most of last year....until the problem was corrected we were using the floor vent only (don't recall it being very cold)...priot to this heater & a/c worked flawlessly....any suggestions or ideas?  Thanks!

Answer
Manuel,

First issue: It sounds like the compressor is short-cycling, probably due to a low refrigerant condition. Normally, the compressor output should be hot -- refrigerant exits the compressor as a high-pressure gas. The only components that should be cold are on the low side -- which is basically the accumulator and evaporator. Although the compressor suction line is 'technically' on the low side, it's usually warm, since it is receiving R-134a full of heat exchanged from the passenger compartment (or fresh air vent). I'd look into a partial charge and leak (or dye, especially if it's a small leak) test.

Second issue: Perhaps the tech that unhooked everything forgot to plug the Blower Resistor Block (or module, depending on the system) back in. Take a look under the right side of the dash, next to the blower motor -- it's a 4-6 pin connector, and usually houses a thick red wire. Some systems have their high-blower on a separate wire, and thus the high blower only. Regardless, if it's not unplugged, chances are the resistor block is faulty.

Good Luck!
