Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: fan speed resistor location, dash area, blower motor

Question
Hi Dave,
I have a 1998 Olds 88LS and have had diagnostics done to my AC. The fan does not work on high. They said it was a resistor and that the wiring harness was melted as a result. I'd like to find this wiring harness and resistor but don't know where to look. Also, My compressor's clutch is making a grinding noise and I fear eventually it will need to be replaced. Can that be done without removing the compressor frome the vehicle so I won't have to discharge/recharge the system?
Thanks,
Jeff

Answer
HI JEFF, THE RESISTOR IS LOCATED NEXT TO THE BLOWER MOTOR FACING DOWNWARD IN THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE OF THE DASH.IT`S FRONTING THE PASSENGER SIDE AREA.YOU GOTTA LOOK UNDER THE DASH AREA ON THE RIGHT SIDE.THERE MIGHT BE A COVER PLATE THAT NEEDS TO REMOVE FIRST TO GAIN ACCESS TO RESISTOR.AS FOR THE COMPRESSOR, YOU MIGHT AS WELL CHANGE THE COMPRESSOR
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE FREON ANYWAY TO WORK ON THE CLUTCH. THOSE COMPRESSOR ARE SOMEWHAT WEAK,SO I WOULD REPLACE IT IF YOU CAN.THE CLUTCH CAN ONLY BE REMOVE WITH A SPECIAL PULLER AND INSTALLER KIT.

GOOD LUCK
