Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: a/c maxima, diy kit, freon

Question
I have 2001 maxima that had poorly performing a/c. I check the refrigerant levels and they were a little low so I added some using a diy kit. After I added the refrigerant the a/c stopped working. It still blows air and the compressor engages. The a/c blows out cold air for about 5 seconds every five minutes and then continues to blow out hot air. What has happened? This has never happened to me before on my other cars? One of my friends said that the compressor could be toast because I could have pored too much refrigerant in especially in liquid form).

Answer
I seriously doubt that you ruined the compressor as there is a HIGH/LOW pressure swict in the system which shuts OFF the compressor if there is to MUCH or to LITTLE freon in the system.

You need to have someone put a set of AC gages on the system to see what the pressures are doing.
