Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Replace ac compressor, chevy blazer, vacuum pump

Question
The  ac compressor on my 1997 Chevy Blazer is leaking out freon on the end opposite the fan belt. It started as a slow leak lasr year. Recharged and it leaked out in about two months. Recharged again this year and it lasted two or three days. Can I replace the compressor only, or do other components need replaced? Would you recommend a new or rebuilt unit.

Thank you,
Charlie

Answer
A rebuilt is fine and YES replace the accumulator.

just make sure you install the correct amount of refrigerant oil into the new compressor .

Most compressors come with about 6 or 7 ounces of oil in them.

You need to empty out the oil that is in your old compressor and MEASURE how much came out.

Then empty out the oil from the new compressor and ONLY put in the new compressor the same amount that you got out of the old compressor which should be abou 2 to 2 1/2 ounces.

Then you have to use a vacuum pump to evacuate all the air out of the system BEFORE you can add the appropriate amount of freon.
