Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: A/C fan high only, auto parts stores, palm of your hand

Question
The first hot day this summer we turned on the A/C in our 2000 Focus to find that it works only with the fan set on the highest (4th) setting.  It works just fine on that setting, but nothing at all happens if we turn it to a lower fan speed.  What's the deal?

Answer
Your problem is in all probabilities the FAN SPEED RESISTOR.

It looks like it has 3 or 4 springs mounted on a plastic board and will fit in the palm of your hand.

This will be a dealer item as most auto parts stores do NOT carry this component.
