Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: ac compressor, electronic leak detector, chevy blazer

Question
Crossing the two wires did work in getting the compressor engage, but im still getting hot air. I did go to ORiellys auto and picked up some refrigerant leak sealer stuff with a little gage on it to measure the level as well. Do the wires need to be hooked up to the accumulator in order to produce cold air, or is my system just screwed? Thanks Mark  ------------------------

Answer -
On the side of the ACCUMULATOR (receiver/drier) which looks like a large old style aluminum thermos bottle near the back end of the engine at the firewall you will see a 2 wire electrical connector.

1. start the car.

2. turn ON the A/C.

3. Disconnect this 2 wire electrical plug and jumper the 2 wires together inside the connector and listen or watch to see if the compressor engages.

If it DOES, You either are LOW on freon due to a LEAK in the A/C system OR the switch that is screwed onto the accumulator of which you just disconnected the 2 wire electrical connector is faulty.

let me know.

Answer
Do NOT put ANY type of sealer in the A/C system as it is only a temporary LOUSY repair that will cause more damage farther down the road to the A/C system.

You just verified that you have a LOSS of freon from the A.C system due to the fact that crossing the 2 wires made the compressor engage and that you only got HOT air.

In order to do a PROPER REPAIR you must do:

1. Add a can of freon that has the RED DYE in it into the system and see if you can visually see where the leak is coming from. If you cannot see the leak you will have to have a professional shop use an ELECTRONIC LEAK DETECTOR in order to find the leak.

2. Once the leak is found you have to fix the leak.

3. Then you have to use a VACUUM PUMP to evacuate all the air from the A/C system.

4. Then you can add the correct amount of freon to the system.

5. Plug the wire connector back onto the switch AFTER you have installed 2 cans of freon and then add the remaining freon amount.

6. Do NOT add any more freon than the system is designed to hold or you will damage the compressor.

WARNING: Do NOT continue to use the A/C with the switch JUMPERED in order to make the compressor run or you will BLOW UP the compressor or EXPLODE one of the hoses OR you will FREEZE up the hoses with heavy ICE and it will no longer blow cold air.
