Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 99 crysler 300m , no cold air flow, tne n, crysler 300m

Question
we have something in common I too retired in '89 (not by my choice)
after a severely cold winter in tne n'east. we had a day that called for airconditioning...only outside temp air flowed thru system.  my mechanic checked freon level and it was out...did a dye test and could not detect any evidence of a leak and recharged system with freon...after 10 days of cold weather tested system again no freon and no evidence of leaking dye in lines.  i was advised that the leak was most likely under the dash and evaporator would mostlikely have to be replaced at a cost of over $1260. called chrysler customer service and they declined any out of warranty responsibility. car bot feb.99 and is 6yrs 3months old. 51,350 miles. runs well otherwise.
my questions are:
1.does this diagnosis sound correct to you?
2.does getting to the freon lines to test under the dash involve major time and effort ?
3.what should a reasonable cost to repair this problem cost

Answer
As for any type of dealer help, You are WAY OUT of ANY warranty period.

Sounds like the EVAPORATOR has a leak in it and this requires 6 to 8 hours of work to replace it.

Normal cost should be about $600-$700.

I know ALL ABOUT the NorthEsat, I am originally from PA and the wife and I got sick and tired of the COLD and retired to NM.
