Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: changing from R12 over to 134awould, buick riviera, vacuum pump

Question
can I switch my fefrigerent from R12 to 134a with out all that exspensive eqipment ? T he car is a 1990 buick riviera with only 90000 miles and I still like the car even if it is only worth $1200

Answer
To do this conversion CORRECTLY you will need:

1. A vacuum pump.

2. You SHOULD have a good set of A/C manifold gages so you can watch the LOW and HIGH side pressures.

3. A set of SAFETY GLASSES and a light pair of gloves as freon can cause serious frost bite if it contacts your skin for any length of time.

You will then need to:

1. extract all of the R-12 into a suitable invironmental container as freon is NOT to be expelled into the air.

2. You will need to add the EXACT amount of refrigerant oil as per the instructions on the conversion kit.

3. You will need to utilize a vacuum pump to extract the air from the A/C system.

4. You SHOULD have the A/C gages so that you can physically see that the LOW side of the system is HOLDING a steady vacuum for a minimum of 20 minutes.

5. You will need to add The EXACT amount of freon into the system as per the instructions on the conversion kit.

6. Again you should have the gages installed to verify that you have the correct LOW and HIGH side system pressures for your particular system. To MUCH or to LITTLE refrigerant oil and or freon can cause insufficient cooling and or damage to the A/C components.

7. This type of conversion from R-12 to R-134a usually results with a 20% loss of cooling efficiency in the A/C system.
