Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 95 Diamante AC wont work, automatic climate control, freon

Question
Our 95 Diamante is equipped with the automatic climate control. It has progressively taken longer and longer for the system to start operating. It now takes 15-20 minutes or longer, sometimes is does not come on at all. Any ideas? Have owned the car for 2 years. Have had thermostat replaced in last few months.

Answer
The FIRST thing that needs to be checked using a set of A/C gages is to see if there is enough freon in the system. If you have a leak in the system you will suffer a loss of freon and the a/C compressor will NOT operate.

1. start the engine.
2. set the A/C to 60 degrees.
3. Turn ON the blower to HIGH.
4. open the hood and look to see if the compressor is
  running.
5. put your hands on the A/C hoses, Are any of them COLD
to the touch ?. If NOT, You most likely have a leak.
