Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Audi A/C, vacuum pump, atmospheric air

Question
Hi, thanks for taking my question , in oct 04 i had a/c work done on my 96 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8L 12V, V6,full tune up, timing, trans service, brand new condensor(old won had a hole in it , so i never had a/c(salvage car)), BRAND NEW DRYER, after all that my mechanic say's I need a new compressor, I understand his reason , he could'nt test the system without all a/c parts working.

My Question:

Now almost 6 months later i am ready to buy a new compressor(their not cheap ya know) do i have to also buy a brand new dryer again being that it was never used but remained on my car from then til now? because i was told that if the a/c or compressor is not working, the dryer will accumulate dust/dirt or whatever garbage is in the old compressor(which is still conected to the system). if so I think in good faith my mechanic should have took the new dryer off until I was able to buy a compressor. I guess somtimes you must think for you and the mechanic.  Please help I prefer not to buy the same part twice.

Answer
IF your mechanic evacuated all of the atmospheric air out of the A/C system using a vacuum pump and the system STILL has a vacuum in the system, You can usually use the new accumulator (drier) that is on the vehicle.

If there is NO vacuum in the system and the hoses are DISCONNECTED from ANY part of the system then the system is full of air and the accumulator will have to be replaced.

When your mechanic installed the new accumulator and then found out that the compressor was no good. he should have re-installed the old one and evacuated all the air from the new accumulator and recapped the line fittings.

If there is NO VACUUM still in your system, You WILL have to replace the accumulator as it is now saturated with moisture and will not work efficiently.
