Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: A/C Smell, 1993 lexus sc300, lexus sc300

Question
I have a 1993 Lexus SC300. The A/C system was converted to the new "type" a couple of years ago. I was out of the country and the car sat in the gararge for two weeks in September last year(Houston). My wife took it out and it had a really bad smell coming from the A/C. She didn't drive it until I came back home two months later. The smell is strong and repulsive. I took it to a mechanic and he said I might need to have the evaporator replaced. I bought a product DWD2 by mail and had the mechanic to put it in (drilled a hole between the evaporator and blower under the glove compartment). It helps but doesn't get rid of the smell completely. Should I try another producr "Frigi-Fresh" ? I read some horror stories of this product on the internet but am not sure about them. I really appreciate your input and recommendations on getting rid of that smell. Thanks in advance.

Answer
What you most likely have is a normal MOLD buildup on the evaporator due to non-use of the A/C system.

The best product that I have used over the years is LYSOL SPRAY of which will require numerous applications to get rid of the mold build-up. You should also spray the lysol into the fresh air intake vents across the top of the hood below the windshield and also into all of the interior vents where air is emitted.

It may take numerous applications, but it does eventually do the trick.
