Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Air Conditioner Problems, blower motor resistor, compressor failure

Question
My car is a '99 Dodge Stratus. The air conditioner is acting very strange. About a month ago it started making a knocking sound whenever I started the car. Later on, I discovered it would only work when turned on high.  It still works on defrost and heat, however it will not blow out when I turn it to low or any other setting besides high. Also, most times I can't get it to come out of the vent that goes directly towards the face,, only the feet and from the dash. The air and heat work very well except for these problems. What would be causing this, and does it cost alot?

Answer
The compressor knocking is a sign of upcoming compressor failure OR there is NOT enough refrigerant (freon) oil in the compressor and or there is to MUCH refrigerant (freon) in the system. If you have had any LEAKS and or repairs done to the A/C recently I would have them re-check it.

When the BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR fails, All you get is HIGH speed. This part can be obtained at any Dodge dealership. Just go into the parts department and purchase one and then you will know what it looks like in order to find yours on your vehicle.

You stated: "I can't get it to come out of the vent that
goes directly towards the face,, only the
            feet and from the dash.

There are only 3 positions:

1. Defroster vents.
2. Dash vents.
3. Floor vents.

Which vents are NOT working ?.
