Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: No heat on one side, vacuum pot, worst case scenario

Question
I have a 99 Grand Jeep Cherokee.  There are dual heat setters.  On the passenger side where the glove compartment is the heat is great. In the middle under the cd player and on the driver's side the air is cold.  When you turn the knob to change the air nothing happens.  I was told I need a new heater box because the blend door is broken and it takes $778 to replace and that they must take out the AC unit to get to it and that will be another $80 to recharge the AC unit once it's replaced.  Can this be reached through the dashboard?  Is there another option?

Answer
There is NO other option that I am aware of. This is a very common fault.

However, Once they get in there they might find something simple is the problem and your cost will be much cheaper.

The price they quoted you is based on their past experience with this type of complaint.

Naturally, They as well as I would quote you the WORST case scenario, Because if they said it was probably just a brokrn or faulty motor or vacuum pot and the cost would be approx $300 and after they got into it and found that it is the broken blend door and came back and told you that since it IS the blend door the estimate would have to be raised and like anyone you would PITCH A FIT, Saying, You quoted me a price and that's ALL I am going to PAY.

Unfortunately our society is always looking for the easy way out thus the high quote cost.
