Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Air Conditioner working intermittently, electronic leak detector, ultra violet light

Question
I will only be able to ask them tomorrow, but we are not on good speaking
terms at the moment. In anycase they have used some sort of gas a couple
of times to try and pick up the leak - by shining an infrared light on it, it would apparently glow purple
if there was a leak...Thereafter they cleaned the system and regassed it.

Up to this point the system would work for a couple of days and then it would seem that the "gas" was finished. They then claimed that the compressor was finished and that they needed to replace it...

I gave up and let them fix it, they quoted me for the following:
Compressor       +/- $200
Drier Bottle     +/- $ 50
Expansion Valve  +/- $ 40
Clean System     +/- $ 20
Fit Parts        +/- $ 45
Regas          +/- $ 35

* Please note that these prices are translated from Rand to Dollar at R8 to $1.

If you still need me to find out, I will do my utmost best...

Thank you for your quick response...

Answer
What they are doing is adding a DYE into the A/C system that glows under ultra-violet light when a leak of freon is present.

Unfortunately, This procedure is very unreliable.

You need to find a competent facility that has an ELECTRONIC LEAK DETECTOR in order to find your small leak in the system.

My attention would be to the condensor that is mounted in front of the radiator as this would be the most likely suspect to have suffered damage when in an accident.

This place that you keep taking it back to, In my professional opinion, Does NOT have a clue as to what they are doing, Except taking your money.
