Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1996 Intrepid Heater, hot position, occasional lack

Question
Thanks for the quick response and my apologies for the lack of info.

Both heat and AC were working fine this summer.  All controls (fan speed, defrost, floor, vent etc) were working as well.  Over the past 2-3 months the rotary dial that selects amount of heat (or cooling) stopped working on occasion...it still turns but blows max hot air and nothing less with or without the AC on.  The occasional lack of heat control has now become total lack of control...I get very hot air but nothing else.  Gauge temps are normal as well.  I've been told it may be the rotary control ($500 panel from Chrysler) or possibly a valve of some sort that is stuck open in max hot position.  Hopefully this is enough info...please let me know if you need more.

Thanks

My 96 Intrepid only blows hot air.  All controls on the panel work other than the heat control.  The problem evolved over several months from the occasional to now permanent loss of contol (the rotary dial still turns though).  I've replaced the panel with a used one with the same result.  I have no guarantee the used one was functional but find it unlikely that the same control problem exists with the used panel when the other 4 controls on it work.  Chrysler wants $500 for a new panel that is non-returnable so any input you can give me would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

How about A LOT more information. Are you asking that your A/C is totally inoperative or what ?.

Please ELABORATE on this subject. Write me a book of information.

Answer
Your most likely fault is a failure of the vacuum/electric motor that opens and closes the DAMPER DOOR. Look up under the dash and locate these small vacuyum/electric motors and as you cycle thru all the positions of the control panel see which motor does NOT operate and or move a linkage in ANY direction. Put your fingers on the motors and FEEL if they are working internally also.

The fault is either the vacuum/electric motor or the main controller. I have yet to see a faulty control panel, But it is possible.

If I had access to the vehicle, I could resolve your problem within an hour.

Let me know what you find.
