Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: heater cable replacement, vacuum servo, ford taurus

Question
Hi.  I checked the hose temp.  They're both hot.  Let me go into more detail about that knob again: It's not completely slack, as though it had broken off it's post; yet it does not have the kind of gummy twist resistance it once had.  I felt it let go suddenly upon trying it after not using it all summer.   - J.S.

I disconnected the damper door and flipped it to the open position. This did nothing. No heat. Just cool air coming from the vents, as before.          It's clear that I don't know what I am doing, where things are, or how, really, to get at them. The Problem:The middle knob on the dashboard no longer controls between hot and cold. Q:What do I do?  J.

Well, I'll try that tomorrow for the quick fix. But what does a slack knob mean for repairing things properly? Is this something I can do myself?   J.

Hi again! I will need some more advice. I got the glove box to drop down, and I can see the door and a little vacume servo thingy waiting to open it.  It seems ok. But were is the cable? Also, if the heater control head is under the hood I sure couldn't find it. What does it look like? By and by, will I get some heat if I pry that door open?   Much thanks,  Jim S.

Hello!  I have a 1986 Ford Taurus 6.0 4DR Auto-trans. The other day I went to turn the heater knob for the first time after summer and it kind of let loose. It's the one in the middle that graduates between air and heat. How can I change out the cable? I think that's what it is.
         Thanks,  Jim S.
Answer -
Your going to have to either remove the A/C-Heater contorl head or look behind the glove box where the cable attaches to the DAMPER DOOR to see if it just came loose.

The vacuum servo is contolled via the PROGRAMMER and the BCM computer.

Don't even THINK about PRYING ANYTHING or you will be buying some very very expensive parts especially if you bend that DAMPER DOOR.

If you can unhook the vacuum servo from the damper door control rod or the rod from the servo, The damper door will be FREE to manually push it back and for via the control rod.

Are both heater hoses HOT to the touch at normal operating temperature ?. If NOT, Then you may have a thermostat problem, A radiator restriction and or a leak in the coolant chambers within the engine.

Let me know about the hoses.

Answer
If you have HOT heater hoses and you opened the damper door, You would have hot air. I don't think you found the DAMPER DOOR control rod.

The DAMPER door is right in back of the heater core. Look closer.

If you have a camera and can take several pictures of the CONTROL HEAD, and the different components under the dash as well as under the hood near the firewall e-mail them to me at:

so I can get a VISUAL on what EXACTLY your system looks like. They keep changing the designs from year to yaer and it drives us techs NUTS trying to keep up with the changes.
