Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1997 LeSabre AC, clutch assembly, clutch plate

Question
Recently on a rainy day the AC pulley area was screaming. It was all quiet once the AC clutch was engaged. I kept the AC on just to avoid the noise and may be saving something from flying apart. A few days later and the weather was cool and dry, I disengaged the AC clutch. The noise turned very faint. Took it to a shop and they said I needed a rebuilt compressor -- parts and labor add up to about $750.
I don't believe this is a compressor problem because I got full blast of cold air when the AC is engaged.
Is it possible to replace the clutch assembly only? Is it technically more difficult/complex to do that? Will it end up costing me the same as installing a complete compressor, assuming somebody is willing to do it?
If complete compressor assembly is the only way out, should I get a new one or rebuilt one?
What will be cost differential?

Answer
The A/C clutch assembly is usually replaceable, But I do not have a 1997 service manual to say if it is or is not replaceable.

Call your local Buick Dealer Parts Department and ask for:

A: A/C clutch plate and hub assembly for your vehicle.. If they have one then it is REPLACEABLE and is much much cheaper to replace than the complete compressor.

Your looking at maybe $150 to $200.00 to replace it.
