Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Automobile air conditioning problem, nissan altima, soda straw

Question
I have a 1996 Nissan Altima. The front passenger side rug got soaked with water when I ran my air conditioner. I don't see any leaks in the engine compartment but then I not sure what to look for. Any suggestions? This is a used car but I have not had any problems with the AC before. Please feel free to post this question on your website.

Answer
The Air conditioners evaporator acts exactly like your homes central A/C system whereas there is a condensation drain that allows the condensation to spill out onto the ground. What is very common is that the condensation from your vehicles evaporator is NOT leaking out from the bottom of the black plastic housing that has the evaporator inside. There is a small drain HOLE or small drain TUBE that is located under the evaporators black plastic housing that is PLUGGED UP with leaves, debris, etc, etc.

You need to take somethin SOFT such as a plastic soda straw and climb under the vehicle with a flashlight and locaate this HOLE or TUBE. It should be about the size fo yout little finger. Insert the SOFT PLASTIC straw up into this HOLE or tube and you will wind up with a WET HAND and armpit as the condensation runs down the straw and down onto your person. Don't PANIC, IT is ONLY WATER.

NEVER EVER use a SCREW DRIVER or a STICK as you can poke a HOLE in the aluminum evaporator and you will be spending $400.00 to have it replaced.

Use something very soft such as a plastic soda straw or the like of which there is NO WAY that you can damage the evaporator.
