Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: temperature gauge not working right, core leak, astro van

Question
Hi:

The problem I'm having is with my "87 Astro Van.  When I start the van, the temperature gauge does not register.  After awhile, it goes up about a quarter of the way.  The van seems to be running okay.  Could this be a problem with a thermostat or a heater core.  If it's a heater core, where can I find it on the engine?

Thank you.

Answer
If you had a HEATER CORE leak you would see anti-freeze on the ground outside the vehicle.

A faulty thermostat can cause this problem.

Are you sure that the anti-freeze level in the radiator is FULL ?.

Is the OVERFLOW CONTAINER filled with anti-freeze up to the FULL MARK ?.

Could also be a faulty TEMPERATURE SENDER NOT to be confused with a TEMPERATURE SENSOR.
