Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 97 Jeep Wrangler Air Conditioner, jeep wrangler, jumper wire

Question
Hello gain. Now the Jeep is doing more a/c  strange stuff :-) It works great most of the time but has been back in the shop twice in the past two weeks for the same type problem. They could find 'nothing wrong'. But they replaced the low pressure switch and after that it 'never stopped cooling'. I picked it up from the shop and drove it home. The a/c was not blowing cold but a little cool. When I got home I noted the clutch cycling rapidly in and out. I started wiggling wires. When I wiggled the wires on the new low pressure switch the clutch kicked in and stayed for a brief period of time. I found that if I held the wires in a certain position the clutch stayed engaged. So I put in a temporary jumper wire and drove the jeep 50 miles. I alos bought a thermometer and put it in the center vent, running down the highway with it on high the temp got down to 34. Normal driving around town it gets to a little over 40. However, when the temp gets below 40 suddenly there is about half the air volume coming out of the dash vents. It sounds like the air is going inside the dash. NOW, my daughter-in-law tells me that's what has been happening all along!

Suggestions and possible solutions please. She says the vents  are very slow to respond when you change settings. Sometimes they change then and sometimes they take up to 10 minutes then suddenly change to what you set it for. This is all greek to me.

Thanks for your help in the past and hopefully you can advise me about what's going on now.

The a/c compressor and clutch were recently replaced in my daughters 97 Jeep Wrangler. Now sitting still or at speeds lower than 45 mph it will freeze you out but at 45 mph the blower begins to blow warm air and continues to be warm until you start to slow down. Then  as soon as you slow down to 45 or so, or stop it immediately gets cold again.
The shop where we have it for repairs is baffled.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

What I am suspecting is:

1. The A/C compressor is NOT cycling,  Most likely caused by a LOW PRESSURE SWITCH failure.

2. You could have a partial ORFICE TUBE restriction.

3. The system may have had to much refrigeranr (freon) oil put in the system when converted.

4. The system may have to much refrigeranr (freon) put in it when it was converted.

5. A loss of engine vacuum to the controller that operates the DAMPER DOOR within the air distribution system.

These are things that I have run across in the past.

You may have to find a better qualified A/C repair facility.

Do these tests for me:

1. drive it around town with it blowing normal COLD air. As soon as you start to feel warm air, Pull to the side of the highway and do NOT shut off the engine or the A/C. Immediately open the hood and see if you have a heavy accumulation of ice or heavy frost at the receiver/dryer (acumulator) or at any of the larger A/C hoses.

Go and buy a small temperature guage at any parts store for about $2.00 and insert it into the center A/C vent and set the A/C to ON using the LOW SPEED setting for the blower motor and while in PARK, Accelerate the engine to a high idle for 2 or 3 minutes and watch your small temperature guage to see how COLD it reads just before it starts to blow warm air.

Let me know.

QUESTION: Has there been ANY work performed on the vehicle in the past ?. I need to know EVERYTHING that was done.

Answer
First is to rebend the contacts within the wire harness plug that connects to the LOW pressure switch.

Your vent problem could be any number of things such as:

1. A craked vacuum line from the engine to the inside A/C controls.

2. A faulty vacuum/electric vent door controller.

This will require numerous test procedures that would take us days to resolve.
