Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Rear Blend Door Out of Limit on Hot Side, mercury villager, precious informations

Question
Hi! First of all thanks for spend some time to read my questions! Anway, I have a 97 Nissan Quest ( same as the Mercury Villager )...I found out that when I turn on the Air conditioner, I can feel some warm air coming out at the same time...Oh well, I diagnost the air conditioning system and it comes up with the error "REAR BLEND DOOR OUT-OF-LIMIT on HOT SIDE".  Here are my questions...

1. I know that I have to discharge the refrigerant so that I can disconnect the hose connections that's located at the bottom of the car.  Are there any ways I can discharge it and recharge it myself afterward?

2. When the blend door is outta limit to the hot side, what and where do I need to work on? is it the blend door actuator?  what can I do so that I can re-adjust the blend door or I have to get a new one?

3. I would consider myself as a novice since I've never done anything mechanical in a car but the electronics.  Is it too big of a job for me?

Thanks again for spending your time with me and all of your precious informations! have a great day!

Alex

Answer
You do NOT need to discharge the A/C system for a BLEND DOOR fault. The blend door is controlled via the vehicles A/C control module via a bi-directional electric motor. There are what is called TRAVEL LIMITS and Each manufacturer has a different name for this component.

What is happening is that the blend door is exceeding the limits of travel of the blend door.

As an example, lets say that the range of the blend door is from a minimum of 1 volt to a maximum of 7 volts. These numbers are NOT the actual specifications, But are just used as a general reference.

OK, If the blend door is not within these general reference limits, You will get the  the error "REAR BLEND DOOR OUT-OF-LIMIT on HOT SIDE" provided you performed your diagnostics correctly.

In most cases the cause is a faulty blend door actuator (motor) and or a mis-adjusted linkage of the blend door.

Since electrical components are NOT RETURNABLE once you buy them, It is risky to make this repair unless you are skilled in this area of repair.

The above is the most common fault, But there could be a different component failure and the only way to be sure is personal inspection and diagnostics performed by myself.

I do not have a staff of people helping me answer your questions, I do it all by my self, Therefore, Due to being retired and a 15 year old computer on a dial-up connection, I do my best to respond to questions within 3 to 4 hours due to the volume of questions I receive on a daily basis.
