Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Air Conditioning, chevy malibu, hayes manuals

Question
Dear Autohelp,

My son has a 1997 Chevy Malibu and the air conditioner does not work.  The fan does blow warm air but not very hard.  I also notice I have difficulty clearing the windshield and it tends to get foggy in certain weather.

The lines have been checked for leaks and I believe that is has been recharged with freon.  In reading the Chilton book on this, I see that some models have fuses under the hood that deal with the air conditioner.  Of course, this is not my specialty so I am totally depending on you.

I appreciate your time and help.  My daughter and I moved to Texas recently, my son is in Korea and has loaned me his car in the meantime.  It has been very hot here and I really want to get this fixed.  As a female, I have realized that it is best to be informed BEFORE I go to get my car repaird.  That way, I know if I can trust the repairman.

Also, if it is something I can fix myself please let me know.  Out of necessity, I had to put a wiper motor in a '90 Pontiac Transport all by myself.  It took all day and I must say was a bugger.  I also had to put in a blower fan for the heater as well.

Again, thank you for your help and time.

Answer
You mentioned that you has a moist residue on the inside of the windshield. Does this moisture have a SWEET SMELL to it ?. If it does your looking at a leaking evaporator that will require replacement. This SWEET SMELL will be more pronounced when the DEFROST is selected on the dash controls.

QUESTION: Does the A/C compressor ENGAGE when you set the dash controls to A/C and or DEFROST.

I have absolutely no use for the Chilton or Hayes manuals as they are not SPECIFIC to your year and model vehicle. They are more of a generalization covering a couple of years and several different configurations of your vehicles components.

Let me know. If you have the ability to e-mail pictures of the engine compartment PLEASE do so and e-mail them to me at:
