Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Heater Core & Evaporator, e mail address, chevy blazer

Question
Is there an easy way to replace the heater core on a 96 Chevy Blazer?  I removed the bottom panels under the dash and noticed what looks like a couple of short metal stubs to support the dash like I could remove some bolts/screws and it would tilt forward.

I also think I have an evaportor problem.  I recently bought this vehicle and the a/c won't charge and the seller said it was the evaporator.  I noticed the the plastic housing around the evaporator is deteriorated and falls apart with the slightest pressure.  Do I need to buy a new/used housing?  Is there an easy way to check the evaporator before buying a new one?

Thanks very much for any help!

Answer
No there is no easy way to replace it and or remove it that I am aware of. Just dive in and do it if you feel comfortable in taking on this task.

As to checking the evap for being the cause of your A/C leak, The simpliest way is to add some refrigerant to the A/C system and using an electronic refrigerant detector you can guide the wand of the detector all around the bottom area of the evap and it will make a buzzing noise when it senses a leaking area on the evap.

There is another way but it is NOT as reliable as the electronic detector. On the bottom side of the evap plastic housing you will see a small drain hole or a small rubber hose about the width of your little finger. If you touch this area with your fingers and you feel any oily substance, This would be some refrigerant oil from the A/C system. This would in most cases indicate an evap leak.
