Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Air compressor clutch sticks on then off..., e mail address, compressor clutch

Question
Just purchased a 1993 Ford Taurus. The air works greatr as far as temp (nice and cold ) but the clutch appears to seaze up every now an then. I'll take a tire iron and rap it litely and it engages. Is this a sign of the compressor going out or could it be another easier to fix problem?

Answer
In most cases it is a fault within the field coil located behind the A/C compressor clutch pulley and bearing assembly.

However, Though rare, There may be a problem within the 2 terminal electrical plug that plugs onto the field coil.

Proper repair would be to replace the field coil as well as the compressor clutch pulley and bearing assembly if noticeability damaged and or if gouged or shows signs of rusting across the face plate.

This requires special tools and exact spacing (air gap) of (0.018 and 0.033 inches) between the clutch hub and pulley.

In most cases due to the compressors location on the engine the compressor will have to be removed to perform the above said task.
