Auto body repair & detailing: bumper, splash shields, phillips head

Question
i have a 1993 ford escort. could you tell me how to remove the rear bumper, i don't see any bolts to remove it. thanks

Answer
Hi Bill!....First off, I would suggest opening the trunk lid, and pulling back the trunk interior trim panels on the rear panel, and covering both 1/4 panels. These are usually held in place with plastic re-usable clips/retainers. From there, you should be able to see any bolts or fasteners that are used to secure the cover from the inside. Next, I would also remove one of the taillights first, to see if there are any retainers underneath it securing the bumper cover. Lots of manufacturers are famous for hiding retainers underneath the lights. These should be either an 8mm or 10mm bolt/nut securing the light. If retainers are used underneath the light, then simply remove the other taillight. From the underneath side at the rear, there is most likely clips/bolts/screws used to fasten the bumper cover to the rear bumper re-inforcement. Remove these as necessary. Next, you will need to remove the screws securing the front edge of the cover, to where it attatches to the rear wheel splash shields at the rear wheel opening. There should be 2 or 3 of these, usually a phillips head. Last of all, at the top leading edge of the cover, where it butts up against the 1/4 panel, there should be one last bolt, driven up vertically into the 1/4 panel. Simpy remove this as well. From there, the cover should simply just slide off. Please be aware of any wiring that needs to be disconnected before completely removing the cover....Hope this helps you out...Drop me another line anytime, if you have any further questions....Thanks....Dave
