Auto body repair & detailing: bondo over lead, primer surfacer, plastic filler

Question
I have a trunk deck that has trim holes filled with lead 40 years ago &the job still looks good. Problem is that there is a dent on the edge of the lead & if i bondo this it will go over the top of the lead job,is this ok or should i use somthing else?

Answer
Hi Ron!....There are a few different ways to go about repairing this...Once lead filler is applied, it is not recommended to use any type of filler over top of it...So a lead fill would be the " Text Book " way to repair it...However, technology has come a long way...A company called Evercoat has a product called " Metal 2 Metal "...It claims it is the nearest thing to lead. I have their parts and supply catalogue...Part # is 889 for the filler, and 611 for the reactor...Unfortunatly, it does not say if you can actually use it overtop of lead...I will give our supplier a call and see if they can say one way or another, and hopefully be able to give you an answer...Another option, is to grind out all of the lead, and repair it with a fiberglass or plastic filler...You had mentioned that there are trim holes filled with lead...If by grinding out the lead, and you run across holes, these will need to be welded up before any filler is applied...Another option, is to see if you have access underneath to the low spot...If you do, you can simply pick up the low spot with a body pick hammer...Once you are satisfied it is as level as possible, simply sand the top coat, and apply a primer surfacer....This should give you enough fill to block the topside flat....Hope this helps you out...Anything else..Please drop me a line...Thanks...Dave
