Auto body repair & detailing: Re Painting a car, inch grinder, surface substrate

Question
I have an 85 1/2 Porsche 944 and I want to do the body work my self ( I did body
work back in high school) I will grind down the paint, fill the hole with bondo,
sand, prime, sand, putty? sand, prime, sand. sound right so far?
I also want to take a crack at painting too (did this a few time on construction
equipment) I will get a paint sprayer (I have compressor) Mixing paint? I will
get filters and then how and what do I mix?
What type of prep do I need to do? wash car, dry, tape off every thing (can I
use blue tape and news paper)? then I will hang clear plastic above, below and
all 4 sides to kind of build a booth, what should I use as a final wipe on the
car just before applying the paint?
thanks

Answer
Hi James!  Depending on the condition of the top surface, ( Substrate ), unless it is showing rust, you do not need to grind it down, unless you would like to do a complete restoration..If that is the case, I would recommend taking it down with 80 grit on an 8 inch grinder/polisher...Keep the speed of the grinder low, as a high speed will warp the metal.....After this is done, you can address the dents, rust, etc.  Any hole that you encounter needs to be welded in with a patch, or at least a patch glued in, glued in depending on the size...Once satisfied with your bodywork, ( make sure it is finished in at LEAST 180 grit ), then it is time to prime.....Check with you local Autobody/Parts supplier for this.....Every paint company has their own recommendations as to the steps, materials, paint gun pressures, etc....As for the masking, it is not recommended to use newspaper, as it will "Bleed"...What I use is a masking paper called "BONMASK", as well as 3M blue tape....It will give you the desired results...If you decide to paint your vehicle yourself, I would also recommend renting a spray booth, if there is one available in your area.....The final wipe before spraying, should be a wax and grease remover, followed by using a tack cloth....Use the tack cloth between coats of the sealer and base coat. DO NOT use it after the clear is applied....Hope this helps...Any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask......Thanks.......Dave
