Auto body repair & detailing: paint flaking off OVERNIGHT, chevy silverado truck, chevy silverado

Question
My husband went out to start his Blue Chevy Silverado truck.(I think its a 2008 model) We bought it used 1 1/2 years ago. It had a new paint job on it at that time.  This morning his entire hood of the truck was flaked up like feathers!! It was in huge pieces and just blew off as we drove down our road. We couldn't believe our eyes.  The temp here has gotten below zero the last few nights, but it did LAST winter too.  His truck does sit outside all them time. We have only noticed a couple VERY small spots on his truck since he got it.  We can't imagine what would make it do this, especially so fast.  It is all the way to the bare metal on the hood.  Can you tell give me a clue as to what in the world would cause something like this??  thanks, Merissa

Answer
Hi Merissa,

Sorry to hear about the paint on your truck. Honestly this didn't start happening overnight though. This has been happening since the vehicle was painted. It sounds like to me from your description that whoever painted the vehicle at the time either didn't follow proper prepping procedures or didn't apply the correct primer. It could actually be a number of issues that could have caused this but without finding out what kind of products and procedures was used it would be almost impossible to pinpoint the cause with accuracy.

I strongly recommend that you take it to a reputable body shop and have it refinished. Have them inspect it for problem areas on top of the cab and the top of the bed rails as well. Good Luck!
