Auto body repair & detailing: Original paint on a 1977 El Camino, luck mark, body man

Question
Can you tell me whether GM use lacquer or enamel to paint the exterior of the 1977 El Caminos.  I am looking at a 1977 El Camino Classic that the paint is laminating.  I was told by a body man that if the original paint was lacquer that it would be a very labor intensive process to repaint.  I have not been able to figure out if it was originally lacquer or enamel.  Can you help me?

Thanks,   Bob

Answer
Bob-

Sorry so slow to answer.

My guess is that it was a enamel finish. There is no way for me to be sure. My auto body career sarted around 92. Base clears were already the norm back then.

I'm not sure I would listen to that body man however. It really doesn't amount to anything what paint is on the car because anyone that is going to do a quality refinsh of that car will strip the paint completely. I'm sure its no different to strip a laquer or an enamel. I hope this helps. Good Luck, Mark
