Auto body repair & detailing: Clear Coat, automotive, paint

Question
Hello,

I have a 2003 Ford F-150.  It has some small areas where the clear-coat has peeled off on outside of one door. Can I buy a can of clear coat and spray it on these spots, after some light sanding?? And repair it myself?  Thank you.   John D.

Answer
Hi John,

In most cases that won't work. Because if the base color has been exposed to sunlight it has already began to fade out more than the surrounding paint that has clear over it. In other words if you clear-coat over it you'll see a difference in the color where the original clear peel off. You really need to spray some color where the clear is missing and clear-coat the whole panel for the best results.

If you choose to go ahead and tackle this job yourself he is an article that I wrote that will help you called "10 Step Automotive Paint Repair
