Auto body repair & detailing: paints and primers for classic motorscooter, por-15, ppg dcc

Question
I am restoring a 1960 Cushman scooter that will be getting a body paint of PPG DCC 14339 cascade blue.  The frame and other mechanical parts will be done in a black enamel.  What brand and type of primers do you recommend?  Can the DCC be clearcoated and do you recommend it.

Answer
Hi Harvey,

Yes, DCC can be clear-coated with no problems at all. It can be done 2 ways. 1 way would be to allow your color to cure for about 8 hours and then clear-coating with the clear of your choice. The 2nd way is by far the best. Use a PPG clear that uses the same hardener as the DCC. If you do this you can actually blend the clear with your last coat of color and then spray a couple of coats of plain clear for extra protection. This could be done just like you were applying 2 more coats of color. Just wait the proper flash times between coats. This method gives amazing depth and clarity.

As for primer and paint for the frame, I would suggest that you consider using POR-15 for the frame. They make products that are extremely tough and actually rival the durability of a powder-coated finish. Here are some links for you to check out:
