Auto body repair & detailing: 2002 mercury mountaineer, spot weld drill, inner fender

Question
replacement or repairing the left front inner fender assembly after collision damage,it seems to be a welded structure , could it be completed in home shop with small MiG welder, are there any tricks of the trade to help, the damaged area is at the headlight bucket area, thank you in advance for the help, John

Answer
The small mig will work. Use spot weld drill bits to remove parts, about 5/16 bits. Drill holes in any new pieces as close as possible to the origional spot weld holes, then plug weld the pieces on. Be sure the metal is ground to the steel, the galvonized coating needs removed. Don't get carried away with the grinder- keep grinding spots small, about the size of a quarter around the intended weld sites, and around the plug weld holes in the replacement parts. Bill
