Auto body repair & detailing: School, collision repair technician, autobody shop

Question
I'm really interested in expanding my knowledge on vehicles on repair and refinishing. I got accepted to UTI and i was wondering if you know anything or anyone that worked with you in your field that was associated in any way with UTI. The school is 32 thousand dollars for 1 year of hardcore training for 6 hours a day. I like the sound of that but i mean really. All i got to say is what about the economy? You should know where i am getting at. what if i dont want to be a mechanic for the rest of my life? i want the knowledge of fixing vehicles tho. i'm confused. I know it is possible that you are the wrong expert. but since you have experience in the field i might be going to the right person.

Answer
Hi James, Here in Canada we go through a Apprenticeship program.Find out if it is the same in the USA. Our program is divided into two groups, 1-Autobody and Collision repair technician, and 2 Automotive paint and refinish technician. They are each 2 year courses totaling 4 years..To get into these courses you must first be hired into a Autobody shop and signed in with the appreticeship board. You will work a full year in the shop and get hands on experience under supervision of a Journeyman certified tech.
The benefits of earning a wage and also getting to go to trade school at the end of each year are great. Save some bucks for the 6 to 8 weeks of school that you will be attending. I do not know how it works in the USA but here in Canada we to collect EI (employment insusance) when you go to school.
I think the Economy will be just fine but will take a bit to recover, you guys have a top notch President in my opinion.
I hope some of this information is benificial to you and I wish you all the best in whatever tradesman you choose.
I would really like to know how you make out with the body shops down there so please let me know.....  Kim
