Auto body repair & detailing: rust on truck, rail dust, rust pinholes

I have small rust pinholes all over my white truck.  They will come off, but with some force. What exactly is this and do you know of any easier way to remove? Thank you very much!

Hi Scotty,

If it's a new vehicle it could be what is known as Rail Dust. The cause of it is steel or iron dust particles from a factory or rail car brakes melt into the finish and when it gets moisture it then rusts and it typically shows much worse on light colored vehicles.

If it's an older vehicle and it is just now beginning to show then the finish is beginning to fail and will probably need to be refinished soon.

To remove I would recommend using an overspray clay and lubricant. If this doesn't work you will most likely need to sand it with a 1500 grit sand paper. Followed by a rubbing compound and a light polish.
