Auto body repair & detailing: plastic moulding paint, plastic moulding, automotive paints

Question
I have a 2004 v70r and want to paint the black plastic panels  below the doors and bumpers to match the color of the car. I was told they cannot be painted because this type of plastic omits a gas that will cause the paint to eventually peel. What do you think?  Thank you !

Answer
Hi John,

The only type of plastic that I am aware of that cannot be painted with modern automotive paints is polyethylene. I honestly don't know whether or not those panels are made of polyethylene.

Polyethylene doesn't accept paint because it emits an oily residue from the plastic when it gets hot and this would cause the paint to peel. I honestly have never heard of any plastic emitting "gas". But then again I'm not a chemist.
