Auto body repair & detailing: White powder spots on paint, power buff, paint failure

Question
ON black paint, trunk there is white powder spots , similar to corrosion on aluminum. I have been told this is the clear coat coming loose . There is no flaking . I have also been told I need to compound this out, but if the whole car is starting to do this I may be a big task. 98 Honda Accord. Always has been in Texas Panhandle (dry, hot, windy)

Answer
The finish is starting to "chalk", a common paint failure on sun bleached, 9 year old cars.. Pay the hundred bucks, have it professionally detailed by a detail shop. Be sure to tell them to POWER BUFF the car, they really like to just pound them full of silicone. It only hides the problem for a couple weeks. If you hand rub this car, you will only fill it full of swirl marks. Black is a real bear to deal with. FYI- you are 1-2 years away from needing a complete paint job. My advice? Have it detailed, trade it off the next day after you get it back. It isn't worth the 1500-3000 bucks to properly repair and refinish this car. Bill
