Auto body repair & detailing: rocker panels, gm trucks, visible spot

Question
rusted rocker panels on 72 chevy p/u husband wants to know how to remove &replace

Answer
The best way is to obtain replacements first. That way you won`t trim out too much of the original part.Remove beyond the rust atleast 2 in. or trim out as much of the area as you have with the new part.A sawzall and cut off wheel work best as well as drilling out all visible spot welds. There are different types of replacement rockers for GM trucks, you are better off spending the extra $ for full panels. You may have to trim the cab corners for access.More than likely they are rusty too. Also you will want to replace the inner rockers too. This will be important so as to have something to weld to.Drill holes in the replacement panels every 2 to 3 in. weld and grind.Weld the seams and grind and apply filler as needed. Also if you can apply a rust prevenative primer inside after you weld this will prevent further corrsion in the future.
