Auto body repair & detailing: Salvage?, salvage yard parts, new car dealership

Question
My 1998 Wolfsburg Edition VW Jetta was recently in an accident. The damage estimate was approximately $7800, and I bought the car last year for $4500. The other driver was cited for the accident, and she had no insurance. I only held liability insurance on my car. I would like to sell whatever is left of the vehicle, but don't really know who to contact in AZ, or if I should be looking for a salvage yard, parts yard, etc. Any suggestions

Answer
Martha-

I wish I had some wonderful news for you. Unfortunately, you are in a horrible situation that no one should have to deal with. I wish all drivers were responsible enough to have insurance. I am afraid that if you offer the car for salvage you may not get much for it. You can contact a wrecking yard in your area and request a salvage bid. Contact a salvage yard that specializes in VW or German makes if one exists. They will have someone in their office that specializes in this and that person may or may not wish to see the vehicle before giving you the bid. It may be only $300 to $800 depending on the condition, mileage, and the nature of the damage. I have also been employed at new car dealership body shops where the sales department has taken in vehicles on trade that were either damaged or totalled. If you have not already replaced the car consider this option. Good luck to you. Mark
