Auto body repair & detailing: repair chip in clear coat, square foot area, tiny dings

Question
Hi. I have a area on my hood where the clear coat has peeled off right down to the base paint.  I have an airbrush, compressor and touch up gun as well as plenty of patience that several coats and wet sanding may require.  Is it possible/reasonable to build the clear coat layer back up.  I would rather not respray the entire area yet as there are numerous tiny dings that I am not ready to tackle yet.  A hood vinyl was peeled of which took with it a small patch of the clear coat.  It is gone.  The base coat remains intact however, has aquired some dust.  How should I prep the base color if it can indeed be done.  The chip in the clear appears to be about finger nail thickness.  I also believe my color is achieved only with the addition of the clear coat over the base color.  My only other reasonable solution is to cover it up with another sticker for now.... but I would really rather not.  If you have any info or perhaps even a better idea I would appreciate it so much.

Answer
You must wetsand back the clearcoat to a smooth not raised edge. In doing so you will get into the basecoat and it will make it change to a lighter version of that color. Ok so wetsand the affected area smooth with 600 grit then about a square foot around that area with 1200. blend in the base coat where needed then clearcoat in that square foot area. after drying for twentyfour hours buff the overspray easely but not to hard so you dont burn the new clear. Thats the only way if you are not going to clear the whole hood panel.
