Auto body repair & detailing: all turn signals flash too rapidly, porsche 911sc, expertise thanks

Question
I just bought at 1979 Porsche 911sc.  A few days after the purchase, the turn signals started flashing very rapidly when I signal, as if there was a burned out bulb on both sides.
(The guy sold the Porsche because he just wasn't driving it much anymore.  Maybe it's sat in the garage too much.)
I've inspected and cleaned all the bulb sockets, replaced a brake light bulb and one turn signal bulb that wasn't making good contact.
The old bulbs were number 1034.  I replaced them with 1157. Seems I've been told that the only difference between the 1034 and the 1157 is that the 1157 lasts longer. I've also heard that if you put in the wrong bulbs, "results are unpredictable."
Since both left and right flash rapidly, that makes me think the problem's not in a bulb or socket, but upstream from that, something that affects both sides.
After much hunting I think I found the flasher unit, but wasn't able to pull it out.  This thing has Bosch electrical parts.
I'm reluctant to buy a new flasher because it sounds to me like a wiring problem not a flasher problem.  Any suggestions on this problem? I've a multimeter but I've not use it on something like this before.  You do say "electrical" in your description of expertise.
 Thanks in advance,

Answer
  hi bill,
without being able to check it myself makes it hard to say for sure what might be wrong. they make a standard flasher unit and a heavy duty flasher. sometimes a standard flasher will cause the lights to flash faster. the first thing i would try is to put a heavy duty flasher in, for a few bucks it is worth a try. if this doen't solve the problem then you may have to have some one locally look at it. it is hard to diognoise electrical problems over the computer. i hope the flasher will work. thanks for writing.
