Auto Glass: Mazda 2001 Tribute, window mechanisms, window regulators

Question
Ben - Similar to a previous post you answered.  I was told the motor in my right passenger window is blown as well.  Quoted $289 total to repair.  Thoughts?

Answer
Hello James,

I do not completely understand your question. I am not sure if you have a problem with both the driver door and the passenger door "as well". So let me give you some information that might be helpful regardless of your situation.

The window mechanisms in your Tribute are cable style window regulators.  The motors are an integral part of the mechanism.  So, whether the cable regulator portion of the mechanism fails or the motor portion of the mechanism fails the solution is to replace the entire unit.

The OEM version of the assembly is probably twice as expensive as the aftermarket version.  I do not think the OEM version is anywhere near twice as good.  You will get a lifetime warranty on the aftermarket version and a one year warranty on the OEM version.  The aftermarket version is a much better value.  Go to "dormanproducts.com" and type in 748-710 (driver) or 748-711 (passenger) to see what the part looks like.  Most of the auto parts stores in your area should sell this unit for @ $65.00.  I don't recommend using any aftermarket brand except Dorman.

It takes an experienced mechanic a little less than an hour to set up and organize, confirm the diagnosis, remove the panel, replace the mechanism, re-install the panel and clean up the job site.  If the mechanic is doing both doors at the same time, the second door should take a little less time. I am not sure what the billing rate is in your area so you will have to fill in that blank.

Feel free to send a follow up question in you need more information.
