Auto Glass: Auto Flat Glass, plymoth special

Question
Hi. I saw you are an expert in auto glass. I have a 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Business Coupe. My local company can cut glass for me but wants me to bring them a pattern to cut by. I don't have glass in the car currently and have no way to get an ACCURATE pattern. I have Lexan in the car now but it is cut a little too small and leaks around the seal. Is there a way to get a pattern for this car so that my local company can cut the glass? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Allen

I have done a couple of these Plymouth windshields and remember the hardest part on the last one was doing the passenger windshield glass a a few weeks after doing the Drivers side windshield. I strongly suggest you change both at the same time and here is why:

The last 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Business Coupe I did had chrome around the two windows and one chrome piece in the middle. I don't know if chrome was an option or because it was once an old Emergency vehicle but I told the gentlemen I would look at his car and give him a price on Fabricating a New tinted Windshield as he only needed the Drivers side done to get the car legal to drive here in NY with the safety only inspection, But the crack the whole windshield long was not going to work for him. I recommended he change both windshields because the Passenger side was a bit pitted and looking at the rubber setup on the car it just made sense to me not to have to worry about cracking the passenger side trying to remove the drivers side but he said NO to the passenger side so we agreed on 149.00 for the one.

I remember there was a problem with his divider chrome piece between the windshields and how much of a pain it was to remove because of the tile cement or rusted screws and having to take ALL the chrome off the car for some reason just to remove the Drivers glass but once it was out I cut the new one on the spot and he was happy with the job after it was done

He agreed he should have done both Windshields after he witnessed not only the work that was involved but how crappy the passenger side looked next to the new drivers side.

After two weeks he called me back to do the other side, he said he just could not stand to look at the passenger side glass any more. I told him I would only do it for 185.00 and he said how soon can you get here? I said still I have the old passenger side glass somewhere I can use that as a pattern and cut it at the shop and installed it the next day.

So as you can see from my story:
Both sides are the same and can be used as patterns.
If you live in NY you should call us!
Any Good old timer glass guy should be able to do this job.
even if there is no glass in the car you can still get an accurate pattern
trace a line pattern of the windshield opening by using a piece of cardboard and a fine felt marker then deduct a 1/4inch off the outer most edge of this pattern by using a New 1/4 inch fat felt marker. This deduction of a 1/4 inch is allowing for width of the rubber.  and you have the exact size of your glass!
If you have any questions let me know!

         Hope This Helps!Derek =D
