Auto Glass: 1992 Toyota Camry Passenger window Problems, toyota camry, salvage yard

Question
Hi,

I have a 1992 Toyota camry and the passenger window is having some operating problems.  The driver switch wont control it at all and the passenger switch will only lower it.  The motor is new, and if I apply 12 v directly it will go up.  Could the master(driver) switch be at fault? Fuses?  Maybe a short?  All the other windows seem to be operating correctly.  thanks for you time

Answer
Hello Bryan,

It is not a fuse: a single fuse serves all the windows so if any of them work the fuse is okay.

It could be a bad master window switch, but it could also be a broken wire.  If there is a broken wire you will typically find it in the rubber "boot" located in the hinge area of the driver door.

To check the function of the master window switch you will need an electrical meter or a 12V trouble light.  The two wires that lead from the master window switch to the passenger front door should put out 12V on each wire as you toggle the switch up and down.  If you don't get the 12V on each wire, a used switch from your local salvage yard is the only reasonably priced option that I know of.

If you do get 12V on both passenger front window wires, then your next step is to check for 12V at the electrical connector that plugs into the passenger front window motor.  If you are not getting 12V there your problem is most likely a broken wire.

Feel free to send a follow up question if I can help in any other way.
