Auto Glass: Can I do it myself?, Caravan Town Country Sliding door glass

Question
I have a 1999 Dodge "Caravan" van with fixed-pane windows on the sliding side door.  Today, while closing one of the sliding doors, the glass hit something I had in the seat and shattered.  It appears that this pane of glass was glued on to a rubber seal around the window opening.  I'm wondering if I can replace the glass myself or, if I'm better off to take it to a company for replacement.  I'm guessing there must be some sort of powerful solvent to dissolve the glue holding the remainder of the shattered glass on... then some sort of cleaner to remove all glue residue... then some of that special adhesive to put the new glass on (and some means to hold it in place for a few hours until the glue sets).  Am I correct?  What are the pro's and con's of trying to do it myself and is it worth it?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Curtis,

I Say Go for it. You can find this glass used for 75-100 and I believe they are still bolted in. I have seen them on Ebay for 59.00 + 29.00 shipping. JUST MAKE SURE THE TINT MATCHES.

Take off the inside garnish molding and remove 10-12 9mm? nuts.

Cut any glue on the door frame and prime both glass and frame, Glue with 1 tube of 3M Urethane adhesive found at your local auto parts store.

Get Gloves, Safety Glasses, 3inch 3m painters tape to hold the outside of glass as you are bolting the inside, Not Needed if you have a helper to hold it.

Tighten nuts in a Chris cross pattern until snug, Do Not Over Do it! Window can Blow up if you Gorilla the nuts!

                                              Hope This Helps!  Derek =D
