Auto Glass: 1997 Explorer Sport - 2 door, ford explorer sport, routine experience

Question
QUESTION: My 2 door 97 ford explorer sport's power windows randomly stop working. It's not just windows when it happens, it's the windows the dome light and the windshield wipers. I can go for several months and not have a problem. They were working fine this morning, headed out and about 20 minutes later they wouldn't roll up. Once I parked, I removed keys from ignition, shut door, opened door back up and light was back on and was able to roll windows back up. This started happening about 6 months ago and like I said it's random. I have a pretty good working knowledge of vehicles and electrical components.

ANSWER: Hi Jana,

My first reaction is that you have a problem developing in the bundle of wires in rubber "boot" between the driver door and the body of the car.  As the vehicle ages, the insulation on the wires starts to stiffen and sometimes cracks which can eventually cause the wires to break.  The next time you lose your power windows, wipers, etc., try opening the door a little and then see if you get a connection.  If not, open the door a little more and check again.

If this doesn't lead to a solution, I suggest you ask around to find out who in your area is known for troubleshooting/repairing automobile electrical issues.  I think it is always best to take this kind of problem to someone who has routine experience doing this type of work.

QUESTION: It doesn't always help to open the door and I noticed the last time that they went off I heard a very distinct click sound and when they came back on I heard a click again. Is it possible a relay may be going bad?

Answer
Hi Jana,

Power window problems that are strictly electrical issues are not my strong point, but there is definitely a relay in the Explorer power window circuit. The only thing that makes me doubt that the relay is the problem is the fact that you loose the dome light and the wipers at the same time.  I don't have a wiring diagram available, but I doubt that the same relay serves all three circuits.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

PS. When you do find the source of the problem, I would appreciate a quick note letting me know what you found.
