Auto Glass: Power windows problem, auto glass shop, ford windstar

Question
Hi, I have a Ford Windstar 2002.  The power windows on conductor side is working by 2 inches at the time.  When I press on the switch to open: 2 inches down.  Press another time: 2 inches down, ...  If I want to close, the same 2 inches up each times.  What can I do ?  Can I stay like that for a while or it can get down and never get up again ...  Can I repair myself or I have to go to the dealer ?
Thanks for the answer.

Answer
Hello Stephanie,

The most common problem I see on this vintage of Windstar is a window motor failure.

The symptoms you describe are a bit different than what is typical.  I am wondering if the window quits working for several minutes after it moves two inches or if the window works again immediately after moving the two inches?

If the window quits working for a few minutes before it will move again, then I suspect that window motor will probably quit working completely in the not too distant future.

However, if the window will work again immediately after moving two inches, the motor may be okay and the "glass run channel" may need lubricating.  If so, you can purchase "spray silicone" at a hardware store or lumber yard.  Cheap silicone works just as well as expensive so use the cheapest stuff you can find.  Spray the silicone into the channels where the front and back edges of the glass slide up and down inside the door.  It is better to use more than enough than too little.  Just be sure not to use any type of lubricant but silicone.

If your problem is a failing motor, this is not a job that you can do yourself.  Check with a local auto glass shop as well as your regular mechanic for a quotation.  I suspect both of them will be less expensive than the Ford dealer.

Feel free to send a follow up question if you need anything else.
