Auto Glass: 2000 mustang GT windows will not work right!!!!, loose bracket, mustang gt

Question
QUESTION: 2000 mustang gt power windows will not roll up correctly motors seem to be working good, drivers side rolls to tight and will not go all the way up, passengers side acts like it came off track but guided it up and have not been using them can you buy the plastic rollers with out the regulators some where if you think that is the problem if so could you give me a detailed description on how to replace or get the windows working right again thanks so much for your time

ANSWER: Hi Scott,

This type of problem is usually caused by the failure of the rear glass mounting bracket which comes unglued from the glass.  You will need to remove the door panel to be certain that this is the problem, but I think it is the most likely cause of the issues you describe.

If I am correct about the loose bracket, I don't recommend trying to re-glue the bracket to the glass.  You are much better off replacing the glass with a salvaged glass if you can find one.  You will need to know what month your Mustang was made (look at the sticker on the driver door or body pillar) because Ford made a design change during the 2000 production year.

This is not a repair that can be done by someone without the proper tools and experience, so I won't go into the steps required.  Sorry to disappoint you, but it is a difficult job even for someone who knows how to do it.  An inexperienced person will have a horrible time trying to make this repair.

It will not be an inexpensive repair.  You can expect to pay about $75 - $100 for the salvaged glass and about $75 - $100 for labor and supplies.

Feel free to send a follow up question if there is anything else I can help you with.

QUESTION: Thank you very much for your reply, Though the rear small side windows or triangle windows on the convertible work fine and will roll up or down without problem my girl drove the car out and all of a sudden the front interior side windows just seemed to quit and like i said the passenger side front window would raise with guided help and the drivers side door would raise but go up half way and pop but get really tight like it was leaning in more to the drivers seat if this is still the problem that you are telling me of, how could i check to see, and what do i need to look for when checking? to see if this has happened? Thank you again for trying to help me figure this one out.

Answer
Hello Again Scott,

I am fairly certain my earlier diagnosis is correct.  Even if I am mistaken and the problems you are describing are being caused by bent arms on the window regulator, you will need an expert to make the repairs.

I really don't think you should attempt to do any of this yourself. I recommend that you speak to as many mechanics or glass shops as necessary in order to find some one who is familiar with the typical window regulator problems on the 2000 Mustang.  If they don't already understand what is wrong with the mechanism without taking off the door panel, they don't have enough experience to do the job properly at a reasonable price.

Good luck with your project.
